An extremely realistic and engaging read

I'm a middle aged woman yet I enjoy the self-discovery and romance of young adult lesbian fiction. This book is no exception. The author wrote with the knowing voice of teenage angst and confusion. She also adeptly captured the very human imperfections of all the major characters. I honestly couldn't put the book down.
Another thing. With adult lesbian fiction, the characters' lives are often contrived and hard to relate to. I can't tell you how many times I've read such a novel where both lead characters are beautiful, with dream careers and lots of money. That's how the top 2% of society lives and most lesbians don't reside there.
So much kudos to Jackie Bushore for creating real people and a believable coming out story.

Story thesis: High school girl develops crush on new girl. Struggles and then comes to terms with her sexuality and the reactions of her family/friends
Age of protagonists: High school teenagers (senior year)
Romance Arc: Teen angst heavy
Lesbian status Main character is coming to the realisation she is gay. Her intended is ok with the girl-lovin’ but not happy to call it lesbianism.
Sex Scenes: Insinuated.
Happy Ending: Yes .
Best Feature of story: It’s a well crafted coming out story with appropriate amount of angst and drama.
Worst Features of story The first person narrative is a little awkward at first because it’s quite teen (and I’m far from teen). You get used to it though.
Any supernatural elements: No.
Best suited for: A Saturday afternoon
Recommend to: Teenagers struggling with their sexuality, lesbians who remember their first high school crush and all the uncertainty that came with it.
Would read other books by author, based on this one: Yes

Was a great read. Good ending.

When I review a book I first give a rating and a content advisory.
The book is safely YA. Not for children, but definitely teens. There was almost no profanity, or if here was I can't remember any. No gratuitous drug use. There was a little alcohol consumption, not much. Was not rife w sex or graphic descriptive nudity but there was climax of the sexual situation - yes, they went there. All tastefully done.
While the book had a few cliches that made me cringe 'gays in art class' it was still a great read. Main char and romantic interest were both interesting and believable. Had a good ending. The book rarely surprised, but then,it delivered exactly what I was expecting. All the elements were there. Taking the bargain price in mind, and (yes I paid for it) I think it deserves its 5 stars I gave it. I enjoyed it. In all honesty, if I had paid over 6 dollars it would be a 4 star book. But in this range, what I got for what I paid - OH Yeah - 5 stars.
I don't do spoilers on content, so that's it from me. A solid thumbs up.
