Wonderful, funny, MUST READ!!!!!

I read this story in an anthology. It was just too awesome to be bundled in a review with books I wasn't impressed with. I was already a fan of Teresa Gabelman thanks to the Protector Series. The minute I saw this was book one in a series the happy dance commenced. So what did I like about it--The Foster brothers are just goofy and good natured. Garrett is the pack alpha, the protector of all and soon to be spoken for (Of course he doesn't know that). Janna Lawson is the perfect female character. She is a defender of the weak, picking up and caring for two young pups, while on the run. She is strong enough that she has held off the change all of her life (the problem of having a human mother and hiding from the world). A lot of the laughs came from Janna's lack of knowledge about the pack. She talks back to Garrett. She talked to other wolves, even after being informed that she was Garrett's mate. She would go against the pack if she saw it was the best way to protect another. Marcus and Hunter Foster add more laughs. I can't wait to read and laugh at their stories. Please tell me we will get their stories.

I love this author and the Protector series she writes and knew the minute i brought this new series, it was going to be just as good. Wow i was totally right. This is a great and awesome read, if you love the Protectors series you will definitely love this book. Definitely worth 5 stars and more.

The Reaping is an ancient, forbidden hunt and someone has started it again. In book one, Forbidden Hunger we are introduced to the Foster Pack of Lee County. This is the first book in Teresa Gabelman’s new series, Lee County Wolves. It delves into good vs. evil and those that would fight and defeat it. Janna and Garrett are fated, true mates and this is their story.

Her dying mother’s last request was for Janna Lawson to find her father and tell him that she died loving him. That she never betrayed his secret. Janna is a hybrid and knows nothing about being a shifter. She needs answers and a safe place for herself and the young ones she is looking after. Is the man she is looking for part of this pack? Will the Foster Pack take them in and protect them or will she have to continue running? The way Garrett Foster is looking at her and the way her wolf is reacting to him, maybe he will let them stay.

He is the alpha and protector of his pack. So when an unknown woman enters his territory with a teen and a young child, he goes into full alpha mode. What pack do they belong to and why does her wolf call to his? His gut is telling him trouble is headed towards his pack and this woman is his! Garrett has never had a problem attracting females, but now he knows why he never kept one of them.

This is an action filled story with humor, sizzling sexual attraction and mysteries that must be solved. Great storyline development and creative approach to shifters and the world they live in. Characters are fashioned in a way that they will entrench themselves into the readers thoughts and remain after the book is finished.

Vol. 4 takes "Bone" into overdrive

Timeless is every way, "Bone" is an expansive story about three "bone creatures" (you'd have to see them to understand) that find themselves in a valley peopled with an assortment of crazy and interesting characters. Looming over it all is the menace of a great evil, first glimpsed by the ferocious (and funny) rat creatures, but later revealed to be something much more disturbing.
"The Dragonslayer," the fourth in the nine-volume "Bone" series, ramps up the tension and dramatically increases the scope and scale of the story, while retaining touches of its all ages humor.
This volume picks up where the third left off, as revelations about the main characters and the evil looming over the peaceful valley central to the tale draw the reader more fully into Jeff Smith's wonderfully-woven plot. Though still geared towards an all-ages audience, the deeper issues that make this compelling reading for adults really begin to show here, taking prominence over the humor through a good portion of the book.
Smith combines the kind of classic storytelling perfected by the likes of the legendary Carl Barks (Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge) and Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes) - gleefully funny cartooning with outrageously expressive faces and gestures - with the epic and engaging plotting of a sweeping fairy tale. "Bone" walks a tightrope and walks it well, managing to be something fans of both Donald Duck and Bilbo Baggins can enjoy.
Jeff Smith's "Bone" series is a critically acclaimed but criminally overlooked epic. Critics recognize Smith's masterful storytelling abilities and are drawn to his mix of all-ages humor and more mature darkness, but the black and white art and lack of superheroes turn off many comic book readers, making it a hit only in the "underground" sense.
And that's too bad, because this deserves to be read. Readers able to look past the lack of men in tights and color artwork will delight in this series. Little doubt people will still be reading "Bone" 50 years from now. Broad in scope yet personal and quaint, this is a charming story in every way that will surely outlast 90 percent of other comic works on the shelf.

The Story Really Hits Its Stride

"The Dragonslayer" is the fourth volume in the Bone series. The story really moves quickly in this book. Even the humorous sections are focused on the storyline, which wasn't always the case in the previous books. This is another outstanding volume in the series.

We learn a lot about Thorn in this book; her relationship with Rose, and with the Dragons. She questions her abilities, and her resolve, but ultimately she rises to the occasion. Fone sticks by her loyally throughout, but the most interesting relationship has to be between Rose and Thorn. Thorn is very critical of the way Grandma Rose has kept information from her, and she does not hold back her opinion. Rose is dejected, and disappears fairly early on in the book. Phoney Bone continues his plotting to scam the villagers and return to Boneville after taking their stuff. Lucius is trying to locate Rose after she disappears, and Smiley Bone continues to provide some lightness to the story. A continuing mystery is the cloaked men, who show up periodically, but arrive just in time at the end of this book.

Fills a dreadful vacuum in literature for girls - but with some reservations...

I got the first volume - Out of Boneville - to read to my 7 yr old granddaughter. She loved it, so I got the whole set bound in a single volume. In this form the entire volume is in black and white except for chapter title pages, which is not as attractive.

The good news first: The artwork is brilliant, the storyline is captivating, and the characters are simply irresistible; witty, hip, contemporary, etc. Better yet, the primary protagonists are two females... a grandmother and her teenage granddaughter. Both are attractive and feminine, but wonderfully powerful, decisive and effective - never masculine or "comic-booky". Moreover, their characters (and many others) are extensively developed - which is why this truly is a graphic NOVEL. Aside from this series (and Harry Potter, for older kids) I've looked without success for literature that includes girls as intelligent and competent protagonists. This series helps to fill a dreadful vacuum in literature for girls - although it will surely be of equal interest to boys.

And then the bad news: Some aspects of the storyline are not terribly appropriate for younger (or maybe, any) children. 1) Much of the storyline occurs in or revolves around a tavern. 2) Gambling is a central issue to the storyline and, although not especially glorified, neither is it condemned. 3) One scene, although innocent and handled delicately, involves mixed nude bathing (which I personally found inoffensive). But for the first two problems I'm certain that the "Bone" series would have shaken the world of young people's literature as Harry Potter did.

Despite my reservations, my granddaughter wants to hear nothing else at bedtime, and we're on our 3rd time through!

A Good Reflection

G.K. Chesterton once described with mirth the experience of imagining Churches turned upside down, their spires pointing into the ground. The effect for him was of seeing something in an entirely new way, a twisting or tuning of reality that made something assumed appear in a fresh light. It is an effect that Chesterton frequently practiced in his writing, because he knew well that the mundane can easily be marvelous again with merely a change in perspective. This twisting, perspective-changing characteristic is the great strength of Joy Davidman's take on the Ten Commandments, Smoke on the Mountain. From it, I have come away with a renewed perspective, a challenged and changed view of the assumed and sometimes mundane Ten Commandments.

Davidman was the wife of C.S. Lewis and a fascinating character in her own right. She was Jewish, a former Communist, an American, and these characteristics are reflected in her book. As Lewis says in the introduction to the book, "every story of conversion is the story of a blessed defeat" (7), and in submitting to Christ all of Davidman's diverse history is brought into the service of her faith, providing the unique lens through which she views the Ten Commandments. (Incidentally, if you're interested in reading about her life, I highly recommend Lyle Dorsett's A Love Observed.)

As I've hinted already, Davidman's strength is in her ability to take the familiar words of the commandments and tune them in such a way that you hear them in fresh and challenging ways. In her discussion of the second command, to make no idols, Davidman says the following: "The essence of idolatry is its attempt to control and enslave the deity" (33). Here she cuts to the quick of the matter, and shows that idolatry is not a matter chiefly of gold or silver, but of the heart of man and his attempt to create gods that he can control rather than submitting to the God he cannot control.

Or take the third commandment (against taking God's name in vain). Challenging our assumptions, Davidman dismisses the simple interpretation which likens this commandment to a kind of cursing, observing that "Profanity does not insult God--a man cannot insult God; but it does cripple man" (44). Instead, according to Davidman, "what was prohibited was the misuse of power" (44). Not leaving us to simply meditate upon this truism, Davidman takes it a step further and shows how we've taken God's name in vain by applying to our own personal causes the name of the deity.

"If we object to meat-eating, we declare that God is vegetarian; if we abhor war, we proclaim a pacifist Deity. He who turned water into wine to gladden a wedding is now accused by many of favoring that abominable fluid grape juice" (46).

And of course she is right, because the real danger in taking the Lord's name in vain is applying to our own preferences a kind of divine approval. And thus she brings these observations even closer to home:

"There can hardly be a more evil way of taking God's name in vain that this way of presuming to speak in it. For here is spiritual pride, the ultimate sin, in action--the sin of believing in one's own righteousness. The true prophet says humbly, 'To me, a sinful man, God spoke.' But the scribes and Pharisees declare, 'When we speak, God agrees.' They feel no need of special revelation, for they are always, in their own view, infallible. It is this self-righteousness of the pious that most breeds atheism, by inspiring in all decent ordinary men with a loathing of the enormous lie" (46).

Of course, the book has its share of issues as well. The individual chapters feel a little formulaic (story, debunking of assumptions, re-telling of commandment), and some of the examples are locked into 1950s America. What is more, on several occasions Davidman's interpretations are not always on target. She relies a little too heavily on some common, anthropological theories about the development of both man and religion (theories which were presumed facts in the decade of this book's writing) and neglects some of the bible's own witness. For example, in her discussion of the command against adultery she identifies the impetus of the injunction as a protection of property, and while property rights are surely a portion of the seventh commandment, she misses the broader and more important element of covenant breaking which stands at the biblical heart of the commandment. These kinds of oversights serve to remind the reader that one is reading a reflection and meditation on the commandments and not a proper commentary. On the whole, however, the experience of reading Smoke on the Mountain was rewarding and enriched my understanding of the Ten Commandments.

Who Should Read This Book:

Anyone looking for a fresh devotional meditation on the Ten Commandments, but perhaps especially a minister preparing to preach on one or all of the commandments.

Joy Davidman was an American born poet critic, novelist and Christian writer who later married Christian apologist C. S. Lewis. She was born Jewish, spent some time in the Communist party and later accepted Christianity. This book, written in the 50's, was written about the implications of the Ten Commandments for contemporary society -- and in my opinion, it is as up to date now as when it was written.

Each commandment is explained in the way that only a person of Jewish background can do. She often compares and contrasts our society today with the time in which the commandments were originally given. This helps the reader to understand them in more detail.

The only way I could list everything that has helped me from this book would be to rewrite the book here -- which, of course, would be impractical.

Where would I start?

Each chapter is full of insights that will make you stop -- many times -- and think and reflect. In her chapter "Day of Rejoicing" which deals with keeping the Sabbath, she points out how people through the history of Judaism and Christianity have taken the Sabbath and made it into a chore as opposed to the day of rejoicing and celebration that it was supposed to be. (It made me remember my own religious upbringing where I was surrounded by a big list of things that I was NOT supposed to do on Sunday.) She ends the chapter with a question and answer:

Q. How do you keep a day holy?

A. By seeing that it is holy already and behaving accordingly.

In her chapter about adultery, she is even bold enough to say, ". . . true and Christian remedy . . . is to hold the men to as high a standard as women."

On the subject of guilt she says, "For the only way to get rid of a sin is to admit it . . . the Christian is the only man who does NOT go around all the time feeling guilty. For him, sin is a burden he can lay down,. . . It is the unfortunate creature who denies the existence of sin in general or his own in particular who must go on carrying it forever."

It is rich with biblical and historical information and guaranteed to build your faith.

What a treasure!

This book is packed with wonderful stories and illustrations, a great resource for sermons and Bible studies. Though Joy Davidman wrote it over half a century ago, it is absolutely relevant today. When she critiques our society 'today' (in the '50's), she conjures up our culture in the 21st century as well. Particularly strong is her chapter on stealing. Here we see how righteous indignation over our trying to 'get something for nothing' led her to communism and finally to Christ.

Great Study Bible

I have a couple of Study Bibles, and although the NKJV is not my favorite translation, I truly enjoy this Bible. Just starting with the New Testament in Matthew, you can read the prophecy that was fulfilled by the first coming of Christ. Did you know how many prophecies there are about Christ, there are hundreds, including the birth place, the family lineage, the virgin birth, the amount of money he was to be betrayed for, etc. These were all written hundreds (seven hundred from Micah) of years before his birth.

This is how we know the coming prophecies are true, because the previous ones have already been proven out with the Birth, death and resurrection of Christ. So what about the second coming? Some of these have already come to pass, Duet 30:5 Israel returns to its land (also Amos 9:14). Most of them will happen at some future date that only god knows about (Matt 24:36)

If you have an interest in Prophecy, then this Bible is a great tool.

A Bible with VERY good study aids

This is a regular KJV of the Bible with lots of maps, editorals, and study aids thrown in. The extras here are a very nice help in understanding the subject of the seperate books. Please ignore the review from "Honestly, I didn't like it, December 12, 2000 Reviewer: A reader from Texas". Maybe the editorials in this book could have gone into more detail but if I want more info I'll get a book on that alone.
I have friends that don't believe there is a God. I plan on giving them a copy of this study Bible with little articles and editorals on the "sign of the times". I think this is a great Bible to give to new believers or disbelievers considering the recent happenings.

Cool book, but way overpriced

This is a great history of the development of obstetrical instruments. It is wonderfully illustrated, and a fascinating read. However, it is vastly overpriced. This is a cool book, and I've enjoyed reading it. However, if I were not a collector I would not have bought it.
