About the Author
Kira Pollack is the director of photography and visual enterprise at TIME magazine. Since joining TIME in October 2009, the brand's photography has been recognized with many prestigious awards including the World Press Photo of the Year, and the Visa D'Or Award at Visa Pour l'Image. Chinese Link is by far the best structured and sequenced textbook I have ever seen with a scope covering all necessary structural and communicative elements for elementary Chinese.

 

I am a strong supporter for this practice to combine pinyin with characters in first year textbook since it will give learners immediate hints about the pronunciation of characters which are totally foreign to English speaking Chinese learners.

 

The video for ‘Language in Use’ is great!  The video presentations impressed me greatly in that with its authentic settings and naturally occurring communicative activities, they will not only help learners outside class but also in class.

About the Author

Sue-mei Wu, Ph.D., Associate Teaching Professor of Chinese Studies in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. She is the project leader and primary author for the Chinese Link textbook project (Beginning and Intermediate levels). She received her Ph.D. in linguistics, with a minor in language pedagogy, from the Ohio State University. She has taught at Ohio State University, Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University. She has devoted her linguistic, pedagogy and technology expertise to creating and developing various innovative new Chinese courses, textbooks, online courses and web pages. She has designed, developed and coordinated all levels of Chinese languages and culture courses and received several awards to support developing online language, culture and folk performance modules. She is the chair of the Chinese LearnLab of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center (PSLC, funded by NSF, http://learnlab.org), and the PI of various online Chinese language and culture projects. She is the project leader and coordinator of the Chinese Online project funded by NSF. She is the co-author of Classical Chinese Primer (Hong Kong: The Chinese University Press) and the co-author of a new textbook for heritage learners.

 

Yueming Yu, PhD., Teaching Professor and Coordinator of the Chinese Studies Program of the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University and co-author of the Chinese Link textbook project. She came to CMU in 1992 to start the Chinese Program at the Department of Modern Languages and has been the Coordinator of the program ever since. She has more than 40 years of experience in teaching a foreign language. She has taught various levels of Chinese courses and in recent years has focused on the content courses at the advanced level of Chinese. Before she came to the US, she was an Associate Professor of English as well as the coordinator of the International Journalism Program at the Shanghai International Studies University. She was also one of the founding members of the English newspaper (Students Weekly) in Shanghai and a pioneer for the English News Program of Radio Shanghai. She has translated several books from English to Chinese, and compiled English-Chinese dictionaries. Her doctoral dissertation was a research on the criteria used in the selection of textbooks for teaching Chinese in the United States. Her current research focuses on pedagogical issues in Chinese language education with an emphasis on the relationship between teaching language and teaching culture, including a special focus on the teaching of heritage students. She is also the project leader of another textbook of Chinese for heritage students and published a series of Chinese textbooks for online use by high school students.

 

Yanhui Zhang, PhD., is Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics at Chinese University of Hong Kong.  She received her PhD. in Second Language Acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University.  Her research focuses on the fluency and robustness of second language basic skills learning, cross-language transfer, computer-assisted language learning, and bilingual education.

 

Weizhong Tian, obtained her Bachelor of Art degree in English Language and Literature from Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in mainland China. She has been an Instructor of Chinese in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Before coming to the U.S., she taught various levels of English as well as English for Business at a university in China.

Good price for what you get, i guess

I liked that it was binder because the one at my school was not binded, so it need to be put into a binder.
The one at my school also included all the audio cps and access codes, but it was 80.00

WARNING: This does not come with an access code card, you have to buy it seperately. That was a major downer.

I got this book for my Chinese class, I actually got the wrong book! We were using the Simple Character Version. Both of the books would work, I actually think traditional Chinese characters look a lot prettier than simple.

Does not make it easier - very poorly executed.

If you are looking for a book that will simplify your study of Nursing Pharmacology then don't buy this one. I paid over $40 for it and even though the price seems to have come down a bit I still don't think it's worth the money by a long shot. If you must, buy it used, but really, don't waste your money or time.

1) This book is over 700 pages - it will not simplify your study of Pharm. The pages are dense with text, the graphics are not useful and won't help you remember key points. Much of the information is presented in the form of bulleted lists and no effort seems to have been made to boil things down to what is important or essential.

2) I have several other books from the "Incredibly Easy" series and they were useful. They were shorter and less comprehensive than my text book, but they gave me the essential information. Also, the graphics helped you remember key points and concepts. However, this book fails on all of these counts.

3) The book has a high-level table of contents with only 15 entries. One of them, for example, is Respiratory Drugs. The chapter has numerous internal headings, for example, beta blockers, anticholinergics, etc. but you will only know that by paging through the chapter. A detailed table of contents should have been included in this book. There are no chapter outlines either. So you will have to look in the index for any topic (e.g. anticholinergics) you are interested in - where you will NOT find the page range for the section that deals with this topic. Instead you will find every page, or page range, that mentions the topic you looked up. Bottom line - it is very difficult to find the information you need about a particular class of drugs, or about a particular drug.

4) If you are looking for information on antihistamines, you will have to look in the index for that and you'll find 4 page ranges for it so you'll end up paging through these until you find the page range that actually focuses on antihistamines.

5) And if you are looking for Benadryl, for example, you won't find it in the index. Why? Because this book only believes in using generic names. Even the NCLEX will use both, for example, " The patient is taking diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and reports... " So, if you want information on a drug, unless you know the generic name already you will have to look it up in your drug guide first. Seeing drugs in the form 'generic (Trade)' gives you a larger scaffold on which to build your knowledge, which is why good Pharm texts use that form.

6) I've had this book for almost 6 months and I've gone back to it again and again hoping I would find it more useful, attempting to give it the benefit of the doubt. In the end I find this book to be a waste of my time and money and maybe this review can save you from wasting yours as well. And maybe it will motivate the publishers to re-write it for the next edition, which hopefully will be shorter and much better organized.

A must read for anyone interested or engaged in human genetics

This author has a rare ability to explain complex social science topics in ways that just make sense. Her conversational style is welcoming of novice and casual readers of the subject matter. Her research is thorough and thoughtful, which ensures that experts will learn something new as well. The book is not over-burdened with academic references (i.e., she uses endnotes as they are intended to be used), but she doesn't skimp on engaging important and relevant scholarship. Readers will become familiar with highly influential work while being entertained by the fascinating stories she covers in this book. This is an important read for anyone interested in anthropological genetics or the non-medical applications of DNA analysis. You don't have to be an academic to understand or enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.

Dense with Information

Alondra Nelson has done an exemplary job of breaking down incredibly complex social and scientific topics into language a layman can understand without oversimplifying. While it was a bit dry at times, The Social Life of DNA was replete with information. It was so dense with knowledge that it took me thrice the normal time to read.

Not only do I feel that I have learned something about genetics and genealogy, I have, more importantly, come to a greater understand of the cultural significance of these studies in the black community. I have long understood the theft of culture and family from Africans and African-Americans as a part of the many horrors of slavery. What I had failed to understand was how emotionally significant an ethnic identity can be to a person. In particular a person for whom this identity has not only been taken but replaced with an identity as victim.

This has given me a great deal to process for which I thank the author.

For readers interested in any of these topics this book would be a good starting point

The Social Life of DNA: Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation after the Genome offers a brief overview of how the advent of genetic testing has impacted views on race, the birth of genealogical tracing of pre-Middle Passage heritage, and the potential for its use in legal claims against existing companies that profited from the slave trade. This a wide area to cover and while the book delivers what it promises it offers only brief overviews of these topics. What I found most intriguing is the use of DNA to test the genetic ancestry of African Diaspora populations pioneered by biologist Rick Kittles and his company African Ancestry. While it’s clear the author remains skeptical about how accurate this technology is at present, as she demonstrates the newly empowered sense of identity users often get from the test results does offer some basis for the last R of the book’s title—Reconciliation—a vital component for this country to finally come to terms with the still-lingering legacy of slavery.

For readers interested in any of these topics this book would be a good starting point.

Kenneth Anderson has an enviable knack of transporting the reader into the Indian jungle with him. For those of us who have been fortunate enough to experience the special magic in a dense forest with wild animals - this is a treasure.
After a long time, his books are available again. This is a book to be read and re-read, as these jungles are fast dwindling and the magic will soon only be left in books like these.
