Il libro non mi è piaciuto, per diversi motivi.

Innanzitutto, l’intento dichiarato del libro è di per sé problematico, ed è quello di rivolgersi a chi “la scienza moderna non la conosce", e presentare argomenti molto avanzati. Fin qui siamo in un terreno comune a tanta divulgazione. Se aggiungiamo la scelta di condensare il tutto nel formato “breve” questo comporta spesso l’uso di semplificazioni che banalizzano fino a corrompere i contenuti. Si può fare diversamente? Secondo me sì. A chi di fisica non sa nulla (ammettendo che esista una tale audience che compra il libro di Rovelli) si farebbe un servizio migliore raccontando i successi di Newton e Galileo, che sono molto più facili da capire ma contengono tutta la grandezza della spiegazione fisica dei fenomeni naturali, sono a tutti gli effetti "scienza moderna”.

Ammettendo di voler spiegare la fisica del XX secolo, il formato “breve” è inadeguato, ma comunque si potrebbero organizzare gli argomenti molto meglio di come fa Rovelli. In questo libro si parte dalla Relatività Generale senza spiegare la Speciale. Il capitolo successivo spiega la Meccanica Quantistica in nove pagine, e un bel po’ dello spazio viene usato per comunicare all’inesperto lettore che in fondo la Meccanica Quantistica non è compresa completamente, le equazioni “restano misteriose”. Il capitolo sul cosmo contiene disegni carini, e perfino qualche numero (l’età dell’Universo) ed è forse il migliore, anche se non è chiaro a cosa alluda il disegno “ondulato”.

Il capitolo sulle particelle mostra di nuovo un certo disagio nei confronti della Meccanica Quantistica. Tra le poche informazioni che sopravvivono alla cesoia della “brevità” troviamo che il Modello Standard “ha l’aria rappezzata e raccogliticcia” e dà previsioni in modo “assurdamente involuto”. L'autore sarebbe stato molto più efficace nel comunicare i metodi e i successi della scienza moderna se avesse posto l’accento sulla semplicità concettuale, e sul senso di inevitabilità, piuttosto che sui dettagli. Qui — come nel caso della Meccanica Quantistica — stupisce che trovino spazio questi aspetti tecnici ritenuti poco soddisfacenti, vista l’audience a cui ci si rivolge. Anche la materia oscura viene presentata come un “difetto” del Modello Standard. Quando finalmente viene nominato qualche scienziato in relazione al Modello Standard, non si tratta di nessuno dei teorici responsabili (Glashow, Weinberg & Salam, e Gross, Politzer & Wilczek) ma viene citato solo il “nostro senatore Carlo Rubbia”.

Nella lezione successiva scopriamo che, secondo l'autore, nel “theoretical minimum” di un novello amatore c’è la gravità quantistica, e in particolare la “gravità quantistica a loop”. Poco importa che questa teoria sia altamente speculativa, che venga studiata solo da una minoranza della comunità, e che sia ritenuta un approccio molto poco convincente dalla maggioranza degli esperti in materia. Un esempio di come la semplificazione estrema corrompa i contenuti, è la spiegazione dell’apparente “paradosso” che emerge dall’unione tra Meccanica Quantistica e Relatività Generale. Rovelli porta l’esempio dello studente che la mattina va a lezione di Relatività Generale e il pomeriggio a quella di Meccanica Quantistica, e conclude che i professori “sono citrulli” perché la mattina c’è “uno spazio curvo dove tutto è continuo” e il pomeriggio “uno spazio piatto dove saltano quanti di energia”. Ma il citrullo qui sarebbe lo studente, perché non si sarebbe accorto che lo spazio in cui si muovono le sue particelle nel corso di Meccanica Quantistica è anch’esso perfettamente continuo, e non c’è nessun problema a considerarlo curvo invece che piatto. La difficoltà nel matrimonio tra le due teorie emerge solo in condizioni estreme, è molto più sottile da spiegare — anche se non impossibile— , e qui il "guru della gravità quantistica” toppa grossolanamente.

Il capitolo sul calore si distingue per una spiegazione particolarmente involuta delle basi statistiche della termodinamica, che si fatica a seguire. Spiccano domande mal poste che l'autore immagina il lettore si stia ponendo (“Cosa c’entra quello che sappiamo o non sappiamo con le leggi che governano il mondo?”) e una discussione sulla freccia del tempo che non fa nessun riferimento alla cosmologia, ma invece preferisce mescolare fisica e filosofia, citando Heidegger. Vi stupite perché pensavate che il libro fosse sulla scienza moderna? Allora preparatevi per l’ultima lezione. Rovelli infatti, nell’economia del suo breve trattato, per l’ultimo capitolo seleziona “Noi”. Si tratta in parte di un discorso sulla coscienza. Quello della coscienza è sicuramente un problema affascinante, ma ancora troppo difficile per essere formulato e affrontato con i metodi della scienza, ed è un ambito molto lontano dall’expertise di un fisico teorico qual è l’autore, che però non si tira indietro e ci dice la sua. Io in questa miscela di filosofia e scienza non ho capito molto. Mi pare però che emerga una visione “umanistica”, lontana dalla moderna concezione impersonale dell’impresa scientifica. Ancora una volta, in questo capitolo viene tradito l’intento di spiegare argomenti della scienza in modo semplice, e viene invece offerto un flusso di idee, collegamenti e suggestioni che al massimo può emozionare piuttosto che informare.

La ricerca del brivido non è esclusiva di questo capitolo. In generale lo stile del libro è l’opposto di un’asciutta prosa scientifica, spesso l’autore sceglie espressioni immaginifiche che sono più vicine alla poesia che alla descrizione scientifica della Natura. Un estratto su tutti: “Una manciata di tipi di particelle elementari, che fluttuano in continuazione fra l’esistere e il non esistere, pullulano nello spazio anche quando sembra non ci sia nulla, si combinano assieme all’infinito come le venti lettere di un alfabeto cosmico per raccontare l’immensa storia delle galassie, delle stelle innumerevoli, dei raggi cosmici, della luce del sole, delle montagne, dei boschi, dei campi di grano, dei sorrisi dei ragazzi alle feste, e del cielo nero e stellato della notte.”

Finora vi ho detto perché il libro non mi è piaciuto. Vorrei ora spiegare perché il libro mi ha fatto incazzare. Rovelli consapevolmente e ripetutamente si rivolge al suo lettore, che di fisica moderna non sa nulla, e gli espone dei punti di vista personali, delle teorie o interpretazioni di cui lui stesso è autore e che sono tutt’altro che conoscenza condivisa e accettata della fisica moderna. Ne sono esempio il capitolo sulla gravità quantistica a loop, e l’interpretazione “relazionale” della Meccanica Quantistica e Statistica. Tutti coloro che hanno a cuore la soluzione dei misteri irrisolti della Natura, sarebbero molto felici se un giorno la “gravità quantistica a loop” ci offrisse un progresso concreto sul problema della gravità quantistica. Quel giorno però non è ancora arrivato, e affermare che “la principale direzione di ricerca centrata sul tentativo di risolvere il problema è la gravita quantistica a loop” è semplicemente fuorviante e disonesto.

Per concludere, leggere questo libro è nella migliore delle ipotesi una perdita di tempo. A chi interessa sapere qualcosa sulla fisica moderna, consiglio piuttosto gli eccellenti libri divulgativi di Weinberg, uno scienziato che ha avuto il dono di scoprire davvero qualcosa sulla Natura, e che è anche un bravissimo scrittore.

Basic concepts of current physics are described in a manner that is clear and evocative, with very lucid and straightforward prose. Reminds one of Richard Feynman's clarity. This book is a must read for any person who is the least curious about the nature of the physical universe we inhabit. The fact that he makes something as advanced as loop quantum gravity intelligible is quite a miracle. It also is a lesson for scientists to write as simply as possible, so as to reveal the essence of their theory.

Insightful views on physics and our role in the universe

These tightly written lectures do an admirable job of presenting most of the major themes of modern physics and cosmology. To my eye, lesson 6 focuses a bit too much on the role of our "ignorance" and not quite enough on the role of the emergence of new phenomena and physical laws in systems of high complexity involving very large numbers of components such as particles. Lesson 7 is an ambitious, even brave attempt by the author to integrate all of human experience, including our sense of free will and our esthetic response, into the realm of his understanding of science. We are, indeed, stardust, part of the universe. Yet a few nearly universal human phenomena are curiously omitted in this Lucretian view of ourselves. Examples: the human drive for fairness and justice, the religious response found in almost all cultures, the struggle within ourselves that we experience in choosing to do good or evil. But perhaps this is expecting too much. All in all, Rovelli has given us a beautiful little book that is well worth the read.

Good for MOC, Light for Boards

These cards are of good quality with lots of nice facts written on the back. Unfortunately the spread of cards seems a bit weird. There are multiple examples of intravascular DLBCL, and other entities, instead of maximizing the cards for other lesions. It seems they are all relatively straight forward with only high yield facts on the back. These cards are likely good for the MOC exams, but I find them a bit too light for boards studying. I got through them comfortably in a few hours and don't see myself looking at them again before the test.

Good for beginners, but so-so for board test takers

Nice images. Plenty of space to add your own notes (really the key here). The discussions are so-so (good for learning it the first time, not for board prep really). I hate it that you can't see the higher power images as an inset. Everything is at low power. May be it's good for high power mind, but my low power mind need high power images!

I hope in second edition that they offer an expansion pack on different subspecialties (like cyto, derm, or hemepath, since so many subspecialty specialists are preparing for the popular exams).

Best most up to date AP board review book out- much better image quality than Lefkowitch and more discussion of recent IHC and molecular. Numerous errors, switched figures ect but this is typical of a first edition.

Great for PA school clinical year

I am a PA student in my clinical year. I used this book almost exclusively to help prepare for my PAEA end of rotation exam. This book helped me to do very well on my EOR - much better than I was expecting or hoping for. The topics emphasized in this book were very similar to the topics emphasized on the exam and some of the practice questions were almost identical to exam questions. I would highly recommend this to any PA student - especially for clinicals and EOR exams.

Many, even so called believers, do not understand what salvation is all about, not to talk of enjoying it. Salvation includes deliverance for spiritual captives in the spirit.

One of Satan's best instruments against believers is ignorance. This book has been written to expose the subtle ways through which the devil has contaminated many lives thereby preventing them from realizing the purpose of God for their lives.

This book is a practical guide for any one with the determination to experience the power in the name of Jesus Christ as the only name given unto man for salvation. Detailed and Concise!

This book is great! It has the most common orthopedic conditions that one will see in the clinic setting. Not only does it give a brief overview, but it discusses physical exam findings, differential diagnosis, non-operative and operative treatment. I think the thing that really sets this book apart it that it also concisely addresses patient education bullet points to hit, surgical positioning, and describes the surgical procedure(s) that would be performed if the condition is treated surgically. It basically comments on most things the patient will question during the appointment so you won't be left without an answer. There are great anatomical illustrations and tables. It also details how to do the most common procedures and injections with pictures as well as online videos. This book is a combination of Netter's Concise Orthopaedic Anatomy and Essential Orthopaedics. I am a preceptor for PA and medical students, and I recommend this as a practical orthopedic reference that the student will be able to use for the rest of their career. It could even fit into the pocket of a white coat!

There are a handful of minor errors I have found throughout the book (like using a 25g needle for an aspiration) but again, these are minor and you'll recognize these if you have a little bit of ortho knowledge. The biggest area for improvement I see would be with the ICD-9 codes that are listed for each condition. These are great but ICD-10 is coming in October and the ICD-9 codes won't be applicable at that point. This could certainly be updated in a second edition, but seeing how complicated orthopedic ICD-10 coding is going to be it might be an overwhelming section.

Overall, I am very impressed with the amount of practical and useful information that is contained in this small book. If you are going to get one orthopedic book, get this one!

A very informative book

An informative and entertaining book on Soviet Russian society, culture and peoples. Shipler describes this country in a way that is captivating to the reader. He talks about the everyday lives of many ordinary people, the corruption and the harships that many faced in this fascinating and mysterious country. Chapter 4 is a somewhat sociological study on class and social mobilty, but this chapter and the rest of the book read like a non-fiction novel. If you are interested in Russia and its people, I highly recommend that you purchase this book. From religion, to education, crime and politics, Shipler covers very many areas of this enigmatic country.

Very enjoyable

My favorite kind of nonfiction-- the kind that reads like a novel. A fascinating mix of politics, cultural differences, everyday life stories. I read it before heading to Russia to be an exchange student, and reading this perspective was very useful in preparing me for how Russians think, as a consequence of their past. I highly recommend this book.
