OK but Hard

You'll find this very hard unless you are a competent math major at one of the better universities. Similar to Elliot Mendelson's text, but not quite as good. Good chapter on Boolean algebra as a
piece of pure math; Halmos and Givant is gentler, though.
Interesting topic covered: the resolution so dear to the AI crowd. Unlike most mathematicians, Cori and Lascar have time for
the way computer scientists think. At the same time, this book does not cover tableau methods (see Smullyan), natural deduction, Genzen's ideas, and so on. For pure logic at the advanced undergrad level, you're better off with Bostock.
Haven't seen Part II, so cannot comment on the treatment of set theory. This is something Mendelson and Machover already do well.

About the Author
Heidi Gerard Kaduson, PhD, RPT-S, specializes in evaluation and intervention services for children with a variety of behavioral, emotional, and learning problems. She is past president of the Association for Play Therapy and co-director of the Play Therapy Training Institute. Kaduson has co-edited many books and maintains a private practice in Monroe Township, New Jersey. Charles E. Schaefer, PhD, RPT-S, is professor emeritus of psychology, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Hackensack, New Jersey. Schaefer is cofounder and director emeritus of the Association for Play Therapy and a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Among Schaefer's sixty-five books are the outstanding Handbook of Play Therapy and The Therapeutic Use of Child's Play, both of which have become classics in the field. He maintains a private psychotherapy practice for children and their families in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Good to have on hand

I am giving this book the same review as it's more current version, 101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques. There are a lot of really good, creative ideas in this first version, just as there are in the newer version. However, the one thing that is lacking in both books is a quick statement at the begining of each activity that identifies what age group and what general problem the activity is most appropriate for. Such information allows me to decide, right away, whether to invest the time in reading further about the activity if I think it would be relavent to a particular child I am working with.

good book for the beginning composer

This book is a nice sketch idea of how to compose in a small ensemble or solo setting. the examples given are of good quality and obviously very thoughtful. I would recommend this book for beginning composers. The short chapters provide enough details to understand most topics. For a more mature developing composer, I would recommend Techniques of a Modern Composer by David Cope as well as 20th Century Harmony by Vincent Persechetti. Also, nothing really helps understanding composition than just studying the masters! if you need a good book to help you get started, however, this book definately fits the bill.

great read and methodology for novice to advanced composers

I highly recommend this wonderful book. I have used it myself to teach beginning composition lessons, and used it as a reference many times for advanced analysis and composition. It's a real down-to-earth read that can be absorbed quickly while retaining many great composition "rules of thumb". Only a moderate understanding of music theory is needed to grasp concepts within the book. Great exercises in the back of the book.

textbook for Composition available. It's a very tough subject for which to create a textbook, because music can't be composed by recipe. This one has sensible goals and sensible explanations. Like all of them, of course, it needs to be supplemented with other things and sensible assignments created. But this is the third term I've used it, and I still think it's the best there is.

Finance is an exciting and key area for executives to master. Over the course of my career, I have developed a significant number of educational programs for executives that cover many fields in finance and their links with business. These included finance for non-financial managers programs, as well as training programs for experienced finance managers.

But I always faced a challenge. One question was frequently asked after these sessions: "This was great, and I'd like to know more about it. Can you recommend a book for me to read that covers these topics?" Most finance textbooks are too complex and long, and the practical relevance for executives is obscured by more theoretical and technical topics. Some other books are too basic and limited in scope, covering only a very limited set of topics, such as accounting ratios. When faced with this question, eventually I would recommend a couple of chapters from one book, some readings from another, or the kind of 1000-page handbook that people love to carry on the plane back home.

After several years, I realized that too many people were asking for the same thing, but "that thing" did not exist in the market. That is why I decided to write this book.

I have noticed when working with general managers that many of them fear finance, the culprits often being jargon, complicated math, and non-standard concepts that do not make intuitive sense. In this book, I try to avoid all this. In addition, the book presents several practical examples of key finance tools, how they link with strategy, and how to implement them with Microsoft Excel.

This book has been designed to meet the needs of executives, both financial managers as well as non-financial managers. Any executive who wants to probe further and grasp the fundamentals of strategic finance issues will benefit from this book.

Accessible and necessary

Like it or not, finance is the lingua franca of the general manager. And while some senior executives come up through the ranks of finance, others (particularly the rest of us who advanced through other functional areas) need to better command finance knowledge in order to effectively assume senior roles within the firm. (Finally!) this is a book for the rest of us. Complete enough to be useful. Accessible enough for the generalist. Current. And illustrated with interesting examples. Now there is no excuse for not knowing the language.

About the Author
Kosho Uchiyama was born in Tokyo in 1912. He received a master's degree in Western philosophy at Waseda University in 1937 and became a Zen priest three years later under Kodo Sawaki Roshi. Upon Sawaki's death in 1965, he became abbot of Antaiji, a temple and monastery then located on the outskirts of Kyoto. Uchiyama Roshi developed the practice at Antaiji and traveled extensively throughout Japan, lecturing and leading sesshins. He retired from Antaiji in 1975 and lived with his wife at Noke-in, a small temple outside Kyoto, where he continued to write, publish, and meet with the many people who found their way to his door, until his death in 1999. He wrote over twenty books on Zen, including translations of Dogen Zenji in modern Japanese with commentaries, as are various shorter essays. His Opening the Hand of Thought: Foundations of Zen Buddhist Practice is available in English from Wisdom Publications. He was an origami master as well as a Zen master and published several books on origami.

Shohaku Okumura is a Soto Zen priest and Dharma successor of Kosho Uchiyama Roshi. He is a graduate of Komazawa University and has practiced in Japan at Antaiji, Zuioji, and the Kyoto Soto Zen Center, and in Massachusetts at the Pioneer Valley Zendo. He is the former director of the Soto Zen Buddhism International Center in San Francisco. His previously published books of translation include Uchiyama Roshi's Opening the Hand of Thought, as well as Dogen's Extensive Record: A Translation of the Eihei Koroku, with Taigen Dan Leighton. He is the author of Living by Vow: A Practical Introduction to Eight Essential Zen Chants and Texts and Realizing Genjokoan: The Key to Dogen's Shobogenzo. He is the founding teacher of the Sanshin Zen Community, based in Bloomington, Indiana, where he lives with his family.

A Bit Too Negative

Good not great. I wanted to really like this book. And I do like a lot of the ideas. But I think the collection of quotes and commentary could have been stronger and a touch more practically oriented. It feels like too many pages are spend on negative comments, denigrating people who don't follow The Way. And while it makes sense why they feel such people are not following The Way, and perhaps they're even right, still, such negativity doesn't really seem in the Zen spirit being helpful to those who may not have found their way yet.

This little gem of a book is a collection of the teachings of Kodo Sawaki Roshi (1880-1965), with a commentary by his main disciple, Kosho Uchiyama Roshi. Because of Sawaki Roshi's continuous travels throughout Japan to practice zazen with people everywhere, he began to be called "homeless Kodo."

I have been involved with the study and practice of many different forms of buddhist spirituality over the last 28 years...The wisdom, compassion, and humor that resonate from the reading of this book are astounding! Given the simplicity of the writing, I could recommend this book strongly to almost anyone, even those who knew relatively little about buddhist philosophy etc

Good Test Questions but No Video for Mac

This book consists of five tests on perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, in preparation for the National Boards in Echocardiography for cardiac anesthesiologists. Each test is divided into a video section and a written test section, with accompanying answers and brief explanations, as well as references to standard echo textbooks that provide some more in depth discussion of each topic. I thought that the written test questions were quite good, although too much reliance on Sidney Edelman's ultrasound physics book for my taste (lots of wrote memorization without good explanations or thinking required). Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the video half of this book, as the DVD does not work on a Mac, despite the publisher's claim that it will work on OS X 10.2 or above. This is a significant and misleading claim, as half of the benefit of this book is lost to Mac users. This omission could be dismissed if this were the year 2000, but in 2010 when everyone seems to have a Macbook, it is inexcusable.

MCQs ok, Videos are rubbish

Good to break up the study with MCQ's.
The Video library is bordering on useless. You spend most of the time waiting for the clips. They often play for a fraction of a second. You don't have time to even identify which view it is. And if you blink you'll have to start all over again from the start. I got to the 3rd exam 5th case and it jumps back to case 1. Waste of time.
Would only buy it for the MCQs.
Also it is very dated. Needs to be revised.

Doesn't work with leopard or tiger

In spite of the publisher says it wont work on a MAC. I called them and they basically said 'Oh well'. Otherwise very good.
