Intelligent, Imaginative, and Creepy!

I loved Matthew's first book, A Monstrous Place, and this one did not disappoint! I thought it was very Ray-Bradbury-esque in its creepiness and imagination. I couldn't put it down. I'm a huge fan of intelligent middle-grade fiction, and this book is right up there with my favorites. Can't wait for more from this talented author!

Interesting and entertaining

Although this has some scary parts, it also has some life lessons. I read a monstrous place by this author, and found his style most interesting. Not for very young children, but a 9 or 10 year old could enjoy. I will look for more from this author. He could give R.L. Stein some competition.

A lonely boy finds a friend in that world between being awake and asleep. That is basically what happens. No spoilers.

This story is definitely worth a read, a real page turner, you'll want to know what happens next.

It's been sitting there, waiting for me to read for a while and I am glad I finally did.

About the Author
Gregory Pence is one of the pioneering bioethicists of America. Having taught for thirty years in a medical school, he has seen many past prophecies of doom fail. He is optimistic about biotechnology.

He is internationally famous for defending cloning and genetically modified food against bioLuddites who oppose research on stem cells and cloning. Because of his views, his talks have been picketed by Greenpeace and anti-cloning zealots.

His Classic Cases in Medical Ethics: Accounts of the Cases that Shaped Medical Ethics, 4th ed., 2003, is one of the standard textbooks of bioethics. His Who's Afraid of Human Cloning? (1998) is already regarded as a classic in bioethics for its rigorous attack on opponents of cloning. His Cloning After Dolly: Who's STILL Afraid of Human Cloning? will appear in late 2004. His Designer Food: Mutant Harvest or Breadbasket of the World? won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2003.

He doesn't think the sky will fall if a cloned baby is born. In opposing laws against cloning, he was asked to testify in 2001 before Congress and in 2002 before the California Senate.

Constantly in demand for national television, Pence has been interviewed on Bobby Battista's "Talk Back Live" with Bobby Battista, "The Point" with Gretta von Susteren on CNN, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel" on CBS, "Wolf Blitzer's Washington" on CNN, as well as on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" and its "Weekend Edition." He has also been interviewed by TIME magazine, the New York Times, and most national publications. He has published in Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

Pence has given the Soundings Lecture at Castleton State College, VT, the Thornton Lecture at Alma College, MI, the Seidman Trust Lecture at Rhodes College, TN, and the Hughes Memorial Lecture at West Liberty State College in WVA. He has talked at Princeton, Yale, and Stanford. He has given keynote talks about cloning at universities in Portugal, London, Switzerland, and Australia.

Pence teaches at the medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), where he also directs a program for gifted undergraduates pre-admitted to UAB medical school. There, he has been voted Best Teacher.

He grew up in Washington, D.C., was graduated from the College of William and Mary cum laude in Philosophy, and earned his doctorate from New York University in 1974, where he worked on his dissertation under bioethicist Peter Singer, now at Princeton University.

Lacks Qualities of Texts Usually Used for Undergraduate Study

Pence's Medical Ethics was assigned to me to be used in an undergraduate Bioethics class. This book is inconsistent with other texts used in ethics and philosophy courses I have taken. Medical Ethics's four most obvious violations of academic quality are (1) citations that refer to non-academic, activist sources where an official or peer-reviewed citation is needed, (2) a lack of citations for statistics and empirical data important to arguments they are used for, (3) the use of adjectives such as 'evil' to describe controversial topics without an explanation of the adjective's philosophical origin (if one exists), and (4) controversial conclusions stated without foundation. If I were to turn in this book as my homework, it would be given back to me to complete. Prof. Pence does not have to do that, but because the book is read by students that do, he could have at least tried to make his work to the same standard we are held to as undergraduates.

Interestingly, the book just below this one on my Review page, Global Justice and Bioethics edited by Millum and Emanuel, is an example of an ethics book that meets all of the standards undergraduates are held to.

This book holds the key to most chronic pain.

The Triggger Point Manuals are the definitive texts on myofascial medicine. Myofascial medicine impacts every practitioner of medicine. At least half of the patients in any general practice have myofascial trigger points. This book should not be on your shelves--it should be in your hands! If doctors, nurse practitioners, dentists and physical therapists knew how this book could impact their practice and their patients' lives, the publishers would not be able to keep up with the demand for it. This book carefully explains the difference between fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, with new findings on the nature of trigger points. The trigger points of the upper body are explained, with their referral patterns, as well as why they can occur, and what to do about them. Every minute you spend with this book will be worth the time.

When I received this book as a present for passing my medical masseuse exams, I thought I received a "how to fix it" book.
These books are much more for they cover anatomy, innervation, function, testing, reasons behind the pain, differential diagnosis, corrective actions all in addition to Triggerpoint Treatment.
The 2 volumes are a must have in your library for daily reference and/or study. The illustrations are a welcome aid to oneself or for explanatory purposes to clients.

A must-have for LMT's

My daughter is a licensed massage therapist and was saving to purchase this set. She found them available at Amazon.com at a very reasonable price. This set is very highly recommended by massage schools nationwide, containing no-nonsense how-to's with direct instruction. My daughter used several techniques on her patients the first week she received her manuals, and provided great relief from their pain.

I guarantee if you mention this set to any LMT, they will be very familiar with it. It's a wonderful investment and will never become outdated. That is a guarantee by both schools and LMT's!

Historical fiction at its best!

This is the story of a Polish couple, Silvana and Janusz and their son Aurek. They met and married in 1937. As both the Russians and the Germans invaded Poland in 1940 the couple is separated. He joins the military and after a long journey, typical of Poles who chose to fight on after the defeat of their country, ends up in the RAF in England. She initially raped by a German soldier, flees with their son to a live in the forests of Poland. The story opens in 1946 as the couple is reunited after their six year separation. Building on the memories of a deeply loving relationship before the war the couple tries to reestablish their family life. Each has secrets that they do not share with thevother. These secrets, the crux of the story, are slowly revealed in two separate threads. No more spoilers from me on the story!

This book is vividly written and has complexity to the plot that continues to draw you in right up until the last chapter. The long lasting effects of war on people are brilliantly portrayed in the story. In post war Britain, the couple has every advantage- an intact family, a house, a car, a good job - but the lingering effects of what happened to them during the war destroy their chances to go forward. The son has been deeply influenced by his time in the forests avoiding both Germans and Russians and living off the land. In one scene his father shows him how to collect and save birds eggs and the boy can only think of how he wants to eat the eggs contents as he did so often in the forests. He has a particularly difficult time socializing and entering into normal relationships. It was heartbreaking and at times almost too sad to bear. In the end though this story is a triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

A story of LOVE

War is cruel to all the participants whether they want to be in it it not. This story tells the horror of what was experienced by two people. No three people whose lives were forever changed. How is it that people move on after such unspeakable trauma? To survive they must! To live on is to find the smallest glimmer of light that gives hope. They will not forget but they must find forgiveness in their heart for themselves and for others. This story tells also the strength of the bonding of one's native country to it's "children," in this case the beautiful overpowering country of Poland.

Forgotten story remarkably told

I'm trying to think of a more elegant way to put it, but sometimes you've just gotta say: this is a really good book. "The Fall of Paris" is a remarkable job of storytelling, but it's also a primer of how a talented researcher and writer can synthesize an incredible amount of information from a diverse range of sources and turn it into a densely-packed, but still highly readable, narrative. The author balances broad-view scene-painting with an eye for personality and detail. In short, it's a very impressive work.

In an era when the sanguinary nature of the French Revolution is downplayed ("excesses") or fading from memory, the even more bloody life and death of the Paris Commune seem already long forgotten. For a number of reasons, that's not a good thing. The role of the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune in stoking the fires of 75 years of German-French animosity is only the most obvious example. Less apparent, but just as important, is the example the Commune provided to future "leaders of the people" like Lenin and Stalin, and the way it transformed internal French politics.

This book is an excellent work in its own right, and deserves to be read simply on the merits of what it says about the events themselves. But the value of Horne's series of titles on Franco-German conflicts (of which this is the first of three books), and the influence these events had in their time and continue to have in ours, make an even stronger case for spending time in these pages.

Great narrative of a fascinating period of French history

Horne has written a wonderful narrative of the events preceding and the events of the Siege of Paris in 1870-71. Horne's style is captivating and I found that I could not put the book down. The complex relationships that 'good' historical narratives need to develop are very well constructed by Horne. The attention to minute detail is a strong point of this book.
A throughly researched and emminently readable account. Highly recommended.

Captures the excitement of the period

Horne's style makes the story of the Paris siege and commune every bit as compelling, fast-moving and vivid as the best fiction. You get a real sense of the various characters of the period, the opportunistic, the proud, the inept, the comical and the horrific. Brings this exciting, tumultuous time to life with poetic language and insightful observations. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.

This is an excellent text that puts in an intuitive level concepts that usually belong to much more advanced books or technical journals. It should be attractive to both graduate students in economics looking for an intuitive presentation as well as to business or finance Master's students with little background since the book keeps a discursive style with lots of examples.

A important result of the economics.

The author explicates a new theory, which has had a strong diffusion in the last years. This theory is named "Asymmetric information" and is about economics. Stiglitz-Spence-Akerloff had won the Nobel for this fact in 2001.
The question is that the manager and the shareholders can have in the agency the same informations or no.
If they don't have it, we can consider the case of the asymmetric information.
If they have same informations, we consider the model of perfect information.
The second case is important in the sense of the labor rights and the pollution problems.
