"This is the book that will set you straight as to which zombie movies are “factually” spot-on and which ones will get your ass killed if you believe them. Fun fact: zombies generally don’t run, but the freshest of the newly-turned will be much quicker than those already beginning to decompose. It is this kind of myth-building that will be the most interesting to zombie buffs, and which raises the book above a mere novelty and adds a storytelling dimension, like a documentary-style horror film that uses the conventions of nonfiction film to add a layer of realism. Not that the book is a narrative story in any traditional sense, nor is it scary in any way. It’s a tongue-in-cheek, strictly-for-entertainment coffee table book, not meant to be devoured zombie-style, but casually consumed in bite-sized chunks. That said, it’s awfully hard to put down once you’ve started. That it is rich in backstory will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Sean T. Page’s other work. Prior to this manual, he has released two other zombie apocalypse preparedness handbooks, and a number of zombie-themed short stories and novels. This is someone who has spent a lot of time contemplating a ghoul-infested end of times. The Zombie Survival Manual is a bit of a departure for Page, not thematically, of course, but in format. Sean T Page is a self-proclaimed zombie survivalist. His degree from the London School of Economics has given him the skills and confidence to advise government and other public bodies on what to do in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Great book for zombie ;loving kids

Everything about this book appealed to my 11 year son who got it for Christmas.The amount of detailed content, well written and also amusing, the themes and the layout,design and illustrations are excellent.
We live in Austria and my son is growing up in a bi-lingual, German/English, household. Sometimes getting him to read English books is difficult, regardless of theme.This is not a problem with this book, he has his head in it all the time and is now writing and illustrating his own zombie comic strip and stories while continuing to read the book.A recommended buy !.

Yep...ANOTHER Zombie Survival Book...

With all the zombie survival books to choose from, I think it's important to point out what makes this book stand out from the rest.

First of all, Page's Zombie Survival Manual from Hayes is very detailed without being overwhelming. Many other survival books are so difficult to get through, it would be easier to take on an undead horde with your bare hands. This manual is much easier to navigate.

Next, it's entertaining without lowering itself to cheesy humor. It's like a cross between an RPG guide and an Ology book (ex: Dragonology). There's even a test at the end, and a couple of certificates that you can hang up in your doomsday shelter.

Last but not least, Page is not someone jumping on the zombie bandwagon. He is an excellent horror writer, but his specialty is writing survival manuals. He has created a subgenre of his very own. Check out his Alien Invasion Owners' Resistance Manual, if you require more proof. Page ALWAYS does an incredible amount of research for his books.

There is a strong British influence within this book, but it is applicable to most countries. I definitely recommend Page's manual to my fellow zombiephiles, regardless of your Z-plan.

A must have for your zombie nonfiction section.

It isn't often I find myself in agreement with the other reviewers of a book. There is only one thing that could be improved about this book - it could be longer. Not that there is a shortage of information, "Zombie Survival Manual" by Sean T. Page is a fun read and over far too quickly.

The way the book is designed and written is a hoot. From the illustrations, which are far better than any Haynes manual I've ever read, to the little details, the hand print smudges which are in every Haynes manual I've ever read. This book is a testament to what is right and fun about zombie literature.

If you have your zombie books sorted by fiction and nonfiction, as I do, "Zombie Survival Manual" by Sean T. Page demands space on your bookcase.

Global history of Cold War era

This is essentially a history of the Cold War period, i.e. 1945 to the early 1990s. Even so, it does not focus on the U.S. and the Soviet Union, nor great power politics as such. Instead, Vadney broadens the focus and gives due consideration to the Third World which, as he notes, accounts for the vast majority of the world's population (since India and China can be placed in this category). The general emphasis is on major political events and trends, with only some attention given to economic and social factors. Nonetheless, this is still a highly useful book, as Vadney provides essential background and details on a number of events and regions not normally covered in standard "world history" or "Western civ" texts. The book's organization and uncluttered writing style also make it an outstanding reference work for this period.

CHANGES YOUR PERSPECTIVE. Masterful.

I'll keep this short. The book is a terrific overview of what has been happening in our little world since 1945. There is so much here that you will never learn through our media and through other historical text books. Especially given the current world circumstances, it is imperative that Americans learn about histories of other people and how American foreign policy has done some wonderful, and also horrendous, things to other people in the last 50 years. THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK ON AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY FOREVER.

Well Done

Richard Knaak always does a good job on these books and this one is no exception. It is somewhat irritating that it is being done in several small segments instead of all at once. It would have nice to read the entire storyline as opposed to just a few chapters.

Quick read

I enjoyed this even though it was short. Cannot wait until book II comes out next month. I'm a huge lore fan and have all the novels, comics, short stories, graphic novels, etc and this was fun. If you are confused with this book, read Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects and then read the short story Charge of the Aspects. This short story can be found on the wow website under lore and short stories. I hope that helps and you all enjoy this as much as I!

Suddenly I understand the antipathy for Knaak's Warcraft books

I'm writing this review having just finished the fifth part of the series/novel chunks/whatever you want to call it, and I'm looking at the work as a whole. I came into it as a fan of Knaak, having enjoyed his work since the Dragonlance and Dragonrealm days. I've often heard people denigrate him for his Warcraft novels, which puzzled me. I wasn't pleased with some of the stuff in Wolfheart, but having now read Dawn of the Aspects, I understand why people hate on his books so much.

From the start, his characterizations are awful and inconsistent with other presentations of the characters. I haven't read the older Warcraft novels, so perhaps how Kalecgos was portrayed matches how he was at some point in the novels, but it certainly doesn't match where he and Jaina ended up at the end of Tides of War, which this follows both in publication date and the lore timeline. The little we see of modern day Alexstraza doesn't really match where she should be either. She attempted to withdraw from the world following Korialstraz's death. For her to do so again so quickly (especially quickly for a creature who has existed for at least ten thousand years) is ridiculous.

There are logical inconsistencies that are obnoxious as well and threw me out of what little immersion I was able to grasp from the story. For example, it's declared that the dragons are now infertile. Why would five individual dragons losing extra special powers (that of being the Aspects) render the entire species infertile? They are not the only dragons around, nor is it suggested that they are. The Aspects were not the only ones of their flights to reproduce either. It makes no sense at all. The various wars of the time during World of Warcraft has decimated their numbers, to be sure, but to suggest that there will be no more fertile eggs laid ever, from a species that was previously extremely fecund (witness the vast number of whelps present in the game), is ridiculous. There are other examples, ranging from small, but extremely stupid (Kalecgos finding the vision of another dragon ripping hungrily into a fish to be disturbing. He's a predator too, he'd eat in a similar fashion!), to huge (the big bad is described as having numerous functional limbs emerging from his body, but those left no evidence such as bones behind).

The conclusion seemed rather abrupt and rushed. I was 64% of the way through the fifth part when I realized how close I was to the end with no conclusion in sight. The story ends at about 92% (a huge section at the back of each part is given to repeating a bunch of stuff about World of Warcraft, which seems a bit silly, since who else would be reading these books?) It feels a bit off to have almost 10% of each chunk we are paying for not be part of the story.

While I appreciated the book being split up into parts instead of being asked to pay the ridiculous $10-15 they demand for each full e-book all at once (yeah, it ended up being about the same pricewise, but it felt better in little chunks), I would recommend staying far, far away. The time travel tropes are way overdone in Warcraft and the associated novels anyway, and this is so poorly written that it's not worth the frustration trying to make sense of it (hint: it doesn't) brings. It's sad to see what is overall such a noble group of beings in WoW treated so poorly both in writing and the lore it establishes.

Absolutely useless

Almost no information at all. This product is a complete rip off and does not contain what it promises, the "principles" are not included in the book. I think there is no way to get a refund, so be very cautious if you plan to purchase this book.

Thought I was buying his "Principles" book and did not get it, but rather a criticism of the Principles and Ray's methods, by an unknown writer.
Now Ray is a billionaire and the writer probably can't pay his rent-so who do you think I want to listen to?

About the Author

How is Christ in Christmas?

It is nearing the Christmas season, we say we want Jesus to be in Christmas, but in what way is this true? This book came out a few years ago, which is when I first read it, but it's in paperback now, and has something to say to us about Christmas.

In the popular mind the Christmas story as symbolized by the crèche involves Joseph, Mary, and the little baby Jesus lying in a manger (feeding trough), surrounded on one side by shepherds and by three kings on the other. Of course there are the requisite barnyard animals standing around like movie extras. Above this scene flies the tiny cherubic angel. That such a scene is at best a conflation of the gospel texts doesn't seem to matter. It is what we think Christmas is about.

Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan offer to the general reader a different reading of the Christmas story, one that is rooted in their earlier works on Jesus. In fact, if you've been reading any of their recent books you will hear strong echoes (especially of Crossan's God and Empire -- HarperSanFrancisco, 2007). A companion piece to their earlier - and in many ways stronger - The Last Week (HarperSanFrancisco, 2005), Borg and Crossan offer a "parabolic reading" of the two Christmas stories (infancy narratives). They use the term parable here as an alternative to factual and fable - the two usual understandings of these two overlapping but in so many ways very different stories of Jesus' birth. Factualism focuses on historical veracity, while fable implies that these are simply fairy tales that can be easily dispensed with. By speaking of them as parables, they suggest that the focus is not on factuality (which for the most part they discount) but on the meaning of the stories. And meaning they do have. Indeed, these are by their very nature subversive stories - subversive in that they challenge the reigning paradigm (Herod is "King of the Jews" and that Caesar is "Son of God" and Savior and Light of the World.

The authors speak of the infancy narratives as "parabolic overtures," by which they mean that the first two chapters of Matthew and Luke (the only two canonical infancy stories) contain in miniature the full gospel story. In this retelling of the story of Jesus, we discover the parallels and the contrasts. In many ways Matthew portrays Jesus as the New Moses - the new law giver, for like Moses Jesus is rescued from the murderous king. In Matthew Jesus goes down to Egypt to escape Herod's wrath; in Exodus Moses leads the people out of Egypt. But in both cases the lead actor is spared so as to save his people from the hand of the tyrant. Luke on the other hand, sees Jesus in contrast to Caesar Augustus, who also is acclaimed as son of God (Apollo) and Savior. We also see in these first two chapters many of the emphases of Luke's gospel - his emphasis on women (Mary, Elizabeth, and Anna figure prominently), an emphasis on the poor and the marginalized (the shepherds), and on the Holy Spirit.

Central to understanding these stories is their historical context - both their Jewish and their Roman context. Thus imperialism figures prominently (see Crossan's God & Empire). This is a story of contrasting kingdoms - that of Rome and that of God. Both promise peace, but one is byway of victory (violence) and the other through justice (non-violence). As such it is also the story of messianic expectations - the belief that a son of David would one day appear.

Part two of the book moves from contextual issues to the deeper issues inherent in the stories - the genealogies, which are themselves parabolic, the visitation by angels, birth in Bethlehem. Each of these aspects of the story is more theological than historical and is meant to cement the messianic role of Jesus. Again, the contrast here has political and subversive connotations - although Matthew and Luke have different audiences in mind.

Finally, in part three we come to the theological reflections - three images: Light, fulfillment, joy. Whether it is the star guiding the magi to Bethlehem or the glories of heaven that fill the sky when the angels appear to the shepherds, light is a central theme, and at the heart of this usage is the belief that Jesus is the light to the nations/gentiles. Jesus is also fulfillment of the Old Testament. In Matthew it is a prediction-fulfillment formula, whereas in Luke it is more thematic - echoes and reflections in hymns such as the Magnficat where Old Testament language and themes resonate. And finally, as the hymn so resplendently proclaims - the Christmas story is about "Joy to the World."

As one might expect from a book by these two authors, the focus is not on fact but on meaning, with the political implications being paramount. Both writers are concerned that the gospels be seen as a word of warning and a word of hope to a world that is in danger of self-destructing. It is a warning about the dangers of imperialism - whether Roman or American. Most of all it is an attempt to reach out to the lay person - Christian or not. Clergy and scholars will find little that is new here, but this will prove to be useful fodder for even the well informed about scholarly trends.

Whether one agrees with all that is here, the tone is to be appreciated. The love that these men have for the stories is in evidence. Even when they "demythologize" the stories and reveal the fictional side, they don't do so gloatingly, but with a view to helping people better appreciate the meaning of the stories. In this, one hopes they will be successful.

Bor4g and Crossan Publish Another Winner

Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan are famous for taking current biblical scholarship and making it readable for the general public. The First Christmas is an excellent example. It is an easy to read version of current belief about the Birth Narratives in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. It is not a devotional book.
Few Bible academics even imagine that the Birth Narratives are historical. However, to use the word "myth" has too many connotations. Borg and Crossan use the term "parables" for these accounts. Although there is some similarity, the differences are great. Christmas combines the two accounts, and nobody is aware of it.
This book calls the Birth Narratives "parabolic overtures," meaaning that they are intentional parables, intended to tell the general approach to Jesus that is taken in each Gospel, Matthew and Luke. The comparison is excellent reading.

I studied Drafting years ago and was very close to getting my degree. However I did not finish because I sought a career in the Army instead. I have used what I learned to continue in drawing different things I have made over the years. Now that I am retired I have purchased many different books that help me to stay sharp in making Blue Prints and scketches. These come in handy as practice so I might go back to school and finish getting my degree. Most drafting is done on the computer however doing a good rough draft is still easier and quicker on paper.

good intro to spanish literature

I am currently reading this book for a Spanish class, and the novels are very entertaining. I found myself reading ahead just because the story was so compelling. Each is a story about a rite of passage, and the reading level is good for intermediate to advanced students. I have been studying Spanish for almost 8 years and had no difficulty with the language of the book. I highly recommend this for a quick, interesting read, possibly for brushing up on Spanish.
